Goldenseal, Hydrastis canadensis, is a locally acting antibiotic, and a mild immune-stimulant, useful in upper respiratory, urinary, yeast, and digestive tract infections. It is very drying and particularly helpful after the infection has passed and there is lingering stagnation in the respiratory, digestive, or urinary mucous membranes. Goldenseal lowers blood sugar and, like most bitters, stimulates digestion. It is a specific remedy for diarrhea caused by giardia. This wide-ranging herb has also been used to treat herpes and chlamydia infections and herpes
Can be used as a tea (very bitter), tincture, capsule, glycerite, and powder.
Warnings: Keep out of reach of children. Goldenseal, as a single herb, should not be used longer than 2 weeks. Use under the supervision of a health care professional if pregnant or breastfeeding.
