Holy basil, Ocimum sanctum, is heavily used in Ayurvedic medicine. In western herbalism, it is considered an adaptogen and general tonic. It protects the heart from stress, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and stabilizes blood sugar levels. It reduces feelings of stress and reduces excessive immune responses in conditions like hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and asthma. At the same time, it enhances digestion, cerebral circulation, memory, concentration, and mental acuity. Avicenna considered all basils to be heart exhilarants, useful for increasing joy and happiness.
