Irish moss, Chondrus crispus, is a seaweed rich in iodine and trace minerals and a source of protein, amino acids, and manganese. It soothes dry and irritated tissues and is helpful for chronic, dry lung conditions and sore throats. Irish moss arrests diarrhea, but it may also act as a mild laxative in conditions involving dry, hard stools. It contains a mucilage (carrageenan) that Is widely used as a stabilizer in dairy products and cosmetics.
