Kava Kava, Piper methysticum, has long been used to treat stress, anxiety, and insomnia. It reduces anxiety and relaxes muscles while maintaining mental alertness. It also elevates mood. The anti-anxiety effects of kava kava compare favorably to those of prescription medications often used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders, such as benzodiazepines (e.g. Ativan, Xanax, Valium, Klonopin), without the side effects commonly seen with these drugs. Kava kava is a diuretic and reduces the pain of urinary tract infections and interstitial cystitis. Kava kava may weaken muscle tone in the uterus and the root can pass through breast milk so it is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.
If you are currently on prescription anti-anxiety medications, do not stop use without consulting your health care professional.
